HORRIBLE stuff

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Worst product EVER for decks - Deck Over. Came off w/in 6 months, and took everything with it, right down to the wood - then the wood started rotting. Had to hand sand my entire deck and have it re-stained by a professional - cost me $6000, not to mention what I spent on the Behr product. They're a terrible company to deal with as well. I've spend months trying to resolve the matter without any progress. I'm filing suit in my home state (PA) tomorrow for the maximum amount permitted in small claims ($12,000) and also joining the class action. What a garbage company!

Paint doesn't cover knots in wood used in door frames

Behr - Paint doesn't cover knots in wood used in door frames
Behr - Paint doesn't cover knots in wood used in door frames - Image 2

My contractor/painter has used "paint and prime" paint in 3 different homes after the door frames and closets were built with pine wood that had some knots in the wood(also bought at Home depot). We used the paint and primer in one, which gave great coverage on the walls but after 2 weeks or so the knots came through on the door frames in all 3 locations. Now, having already paid for the paint and labor I will have to re-paint

Spot prime the knots

Guest

wrong primer

Guest

Use "Kilz" or stain kill on the knots before priming, but better solution ( not cheaper) is to use a clear pine jamb without knots. Your contractor was saving money with the cheap jambs at your expense.

In my 40 years as a contractor, I never used anything but clear pine, hemlock , or fir for door jambs. That knotty pine jamb is so tacky.

Guest

As a contractor, my question is- if I buy a pre-primed door and paint with paint primer 3 coats to cover, WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE ???? You are like the "Great and Powerful OZ", (don't look behind that curtain).

What a crock ! I am old enough to have seen paint products come and go......this needs to be gone !!!

Guest

dumba55! There's no such thing as paint and primer in one.

Read the directions and you'll see that at a minimum, you are supposed to use two coats. The first coat is the "prime" coat, and the second is the "paint" coat. And when it bleeds, (and it will on pine knots!) it says to use such and such primer to stop the bleeding.

People please stop being so lazy and cheap that you use this *** this way!

Just prime the wood. ***.

Peeling off my entire deck

Behr - Peeling off my entire deck
Behr - Peeling off my entire deck - Image 2
Behr - Peeling off my entire deck - Image 3
Behr - Peeling off my entire deck - Image 4

I used over 35 gallons of your Deck Over paint to cover my 14'10" x 28' deck and railings last summer. It now makes me sick to look at since it is all peeling off.

The railing, spindles, decking, ledger boards, all peeling. I bought the paint at Home Depot in Mishawaka Indiana and now I am stuck with a mess.

With the money I spent on paint and a painter to apply it I am guess the loss is $1000.00 Now it will have to be repaired even costing me more money that I don't have. Please help

It’s paint... not stain or acrylic, and yes you need to prep the wood properly and do it in the proper weather conditions

Guest

I had the same experience with this product. Thought I bought the best and regret it everyday.

Guest

I have had the same problem with three different properties. Works great in the shade but will not hold up when exposed to sun light.

I am now trying to repair the damage by applying Kilz then painting with deckover to minimize my time and costs. Fingers crossed.

We put deckover on 5 Months ago, perfect weather and dry. It started peeling In January.

Since putting it on in September it has been warm up until January.

Are there any class action lawsuits yet? I have seen way to many complaints.

Guest

behr is a rock solid paint i stand behind,on both legs...like a behr!!!...lol...

Guest

your wood was wet...dummy!

Calina Tch

We had the same problem and ours looked exactly like Doug's. Now ours is much worse with rotten boards so we have to strip it, scrap it, and replace about 50% of our deck!

Guest

I spent almost 600.00 in 2013 on deckover, huge mistake. My deck is around my pool so I have quite a mess .when I called behr they started telling me that I could rent a sander and sand the spots that were peeling and they would send me some more product and I could re-paint my deck . Yeah ok I really want to re-apply this *** on my deck again.

Guest

How was the surface prepared? What was the weather like?

Did you pressure wash or scrub? It should have taken you a sixth of that amount excluding your railings....

ramjet

It was almost certainly because your deck was not properly prepared. Behr has excellent paint, it's always top rated in Consumer reports.

No, I do not work for Behr paint or anyone who sells it.

Behr Deckover

On the advise of Home Depot this was supposed to be the cats meow I had previously used the restore from Rustolium and that peeled after a couple of months. Home Depot rep said that the Deckover just came out and was a far better product than the restore. So just like most of you I followed all the directions and it started peeling after a month. So I will have to redo the entire deck again . Now I will have to wash it sand it and come up with another plan. The Home depot reps come up with all kind of excuses of what we did wrong. Very discouraging

The home depot rep flat out lied to you. I wouldn't go back there for anything if I were you.

Acey Bjt

Don't blame the Behr product, your problem is a common one and almost always caused by inadequate/improper prep. In other words, you didn't prepare the deck properly. Read the prep directions carefully and thoroughly and then follow to the letter.

Stucco paint turned pink

Behr - Stucco paint turned pink

I purchased Behr Masonary Stucco and Brick paint, had it custom matched to the buff/concrete color of the stucco on our house, used the paint to fill in hair line cracks in stucco and then feather it out to match existing paint. Looked great.

8 months later, when I returned to AZ winter home, every place I had used the paint had turned a neon pink. For some reason the AZ summer sun had reacted with the paint to turn our house into the laughing stock of the neighborhood.

Has anyone else had that problem. Behr representative offered to replace paint, but I'm getting older and am not looking forward to having to hire some one to repaint the whole house.

Same story in North Carolina - multiple homes in ur neighborhood

Guest

I live in Prescott Valley AZ and used the same paint on a stucco wall in back of my home and a year later the paint had faded and developed a pinkish cast to it. Not happy but don't want HD replacement paint.

It's cheap a55 paint to begin with! what did you expect when you went to a discount builders warehouse and bought paint? Maybe you should try some real paint sometime cheapo!

Behr Deckover pealing

I also did everything ask and now I have a huge mess. All summer it looked great. I live at 8000 ft. When the snows melted 30 to 40% of my deck pealed. What a mess. Lousy product ! Any place that was exposed to weather is pealing. You can brush it off with you bare hand. Not sure what to do. I have a large deck and the protected areas look fine. I have no idea how difficult it will be to repair. Everyone that has looked at it tells me what a difficult job it's going to be. I'll never use Behr Products again.

Premium Plus Ultra Exterior Paint fadding in less than 5 yrs

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Painted entire exterior of house in 2011 using Behr's Premium Plus Ultra. Spent about $700. Used the original color label to go back to Home Depot and they provided me a quart to do some touch up on one of my walls. Applied the paint and it is not the same. Went back to Home Depot and they assured me the paint was mixed correctly based on what I took them. They mixed another quart for free and I took it back and tried it again. Same color as the one I paid for but not the original color of the house. So I had to spend another $100 to buy enough paint to a one even coat on that entire wall which doesn't match the other walls. So no I have one wall with the original color we had selected back in 2011 and 4 other sides of the house in a faded color of the original paint. Is that how your warranty works on this paint? Please explain!!! Upset homeowner!!!

Behr paint sucks. That's all there is to it.

I painted my house 10 years ago with a good paint and touched it up this last summer with no problems. Stop buying cheap a55 paint and go to a real paint store instead of a discount building materials store, which is what Home Depot is.

Machele Imf

Paint fades with time and weather. Simple fact.

Don't blame the paint company or anyone else. Nothing you can do.

This is nothing new. Surprised you have not figured this out by now.

Behr - Paint Review

Terrible paint. We bought over 5 gallons to do our deck and it didnt even last the summer. Painted peeled and bubbeled within 2 months. I tried to contact conpany and got nothing! Spent a month trying to contact Behr. Terrible product i would not recommend anything from this company due to lack of good customer service and terrible products. They dont even try to make good with customers, they just ignore.

Most problems such as you experienced are due to improper preparation---don't blame the paint, blame the lack of time and effort spent preparing the surface to be sealed and covered.

That's why there is a class action suit against Behr Deckover? Because the prep wasn't done right?

Don't think so. This product has had an 80% failure rate for at least 5 years now.

I don't think improper prep has anything to do with it. That is just the way Home Depot and Behr is getting out of fixing the issue.

I read above that someone applied this to a new deck. It is designed for a cracked and weathered deck...last resort rehab try.

New decks should be stained...semi-transparent and penetrating. Old decks need to be clean, dry and not hot or in direct sun. I bet every failure was one of the 3...dirty so paint didnt stick, damp so it blistered from moisure underneath or hot so it dried on top faster than below (the thick paint film) and alligatored. It really isnt hard to follow the directions.

That said, I have never used deckover but was researching it to paint my son's porch. The HD guy was pushing it but this is a previously painted porch...with planks like a deck...so I will pass as it is more expensive than porch paint and designed to stick to weathered wood or concrete...not old paint.

Never again!

I applied the Behr Over Deck product on new deck boards that were dried, cleaned as well as older wood rails sanded and cleaned in the early summer. By the following spring the product was peeling and bubbling all over the place. In some areas it was peeling off in large strips. Whats interesting is it was like the moisture from rain and snow was absorbing into the paint and the deck boards and rails were wet beneath the Over Deck paint. I spent a lot of time and money on this product and am deeply disappointed. I have spent a great deal of time peeling and scraping the deck and rails to remove this product. It is the worst and I would totally discourage any one from buying this product.

Worst paint ever for the deck.

Very mad at the mess I have after only a few months. Have to find a product to redo the mess. It is peeling and flaking. It was recommend and I did research at the time. I see it is no longer advertised on TV as well. I will not buy any more Behr products. It is not worth the expense of doing things over and over. Would not recommend to anyone. I am a 67 year old widow, and really don't need the work, this paint has caused me, not to mention the expense. Worst product ever. I will never buy Behr products again, too expense and does not do the job.

Deck Over is worst stuff ever!

Did everything just like it said to do! cleaned and rinsed very well..applied the stuff...2 coats..when it dried it looked like it had a light soap *** on it.splotchy spots..almost sparkly..all over the deck.took a sponge and the scummy stuff came off..like a week later it rained...actually was like a soapy residue.eventually thru the summer it came off..then this winter it bubbled..and ofcourse when bubble broke it got wet under and now the boards under are rotting...I want to know how to get this *** off this spring! I have used Behr paints for years..love the paint and wouldn't use anything else..but this stuff is the worst stuff ever.

Does anyone know if behr has replaced the decking for their horrible product. I have tried for 5 straights days to get the product up. Rented floor sanders, pressure wAshers, nothing will get the paint off my deck boards

Having the same problem...SO MAD!!

Behr deck over is the worst product I have ever used! After spending the extra money on a product that boasted about its ability to restore your deck, I am totally disgusted that I wasted all that money and time for a job that lasted six months before cracking and pealing off.

The deck is in worse condition now than before I used Deck over and I have to replace the wood. What a disaster!

Horrible Behr deckover

We put in a large and expensive brand new deck in the fall of 2015. We covered it with Behr Deckover, and it was professionally done, directions were followed exactly. As of now, only months later, the Deckover has bubbled, has several areas flaking away, and footprints, paw prints and stains will not be removed. We now have to incur more expense to have the Deckover removed and a new material applied. I am also going to contact the Better Business Bureau and file a claim. Through research, I see that many customers have been disappointed with this product. You have ruined my deck. I cannot even sit outside because it is so disgusting looking thanks to this deplorable product of which you have marketed with false claims. To say that we are angry is an u derstatement. We expect to be reimbursed for the Behr Deckover as well as the additional expense caused by YOU.
